52 Week Sewing Challenge - Week 1

You may have seen the 52 Week Sewing Challenge being talked about in the Facebook sewing communities, or maybe not.  Either way, over here at Aurora Designs we often find it challenging to make time to actually sit down at our machines and sew all the beautiful things we dream of. The 52WSC is a great way to stay motivated, try new things and have a bit of accountability so we are jumping on the bandwagon. Every Monday we will post with the weekly challenge as well as inspiration, and what our team is doing for theirs. So lets get started!

Week 1: Something warm/soft.
Right off the bat I can think of several patterns that would be perfect for week 1's challenge. Here are some free options in case you need some inspiration.
-Patterns for Pirates - fleece mittens, slouchy beanie, slouchy head warmer, button cowl, pegs

- Made for Mermaids - neck warmer, mermaid or shark tail blankets, hand warmer, ear warmer, faux fur muff

- Swoon Patterns - scarf neck cardigan

- So Sew Easy -  fleece gloves

- Stitch Upon A Time - wonderland cap

- There are tons of free DIY options online don't be afraid to try them!

 * Some of these patterns are free on their website or group others are free using a code from their Facebook group.

For my week 1 project I decided to make a raglan ( I used Patterns for Pirates slim fit raglan but any raglan or long sleeve tee pattern would work) and hacked the arms to have a stripe detail.  This is something I have had on my pinspiration board for a while and figured now was the perfect time since it cold where I am.  For fabric I chose our heathered french terry in two colors. I used the darker for the main and the lighter for the coordinate.  To create the stripes I simply decided where I wanted them to fall on my arm, how wide I wanted them to be and cut my sleeve pattern in pieces to match what I wanted. I ended up going with  two  2 inch stripes with a 2 inch space between. I then surged the pieces together to construct what the arm pieces looked like before I got slice happy and proceeded to put my top together as normal.
Here is how it came out...

Featured Fabric: Heathered french terry solids is our featured fabric this week, available in  several colors this light weight fabric is great for tops, pants, dresses and more. It features a smooth side and a "looped" textured side both soft in their own ways.
